Incompatible version SQL Server 2008

Uninstalled ACTv17 as add-ins were not loading. When try and reinstall get error Act has detected an incompatible version of Microsoft SQL Server 2008 ACT7 instance. Please uninstall the instance and restart this installation. It was working fine 30 sec before. Want to make sure uninstalling SQL 2008 R2 will solve my problem not create a whole lot more. (Already spent several hours with tech support when I tried to initially install v17 and this is the work around they came up with.)
