Confused re ACT and ACT Essentials free 30-day trial

I just started my 30 day trial today but I was under the impression that ACT Essentials is a software that is to be downloaded to my computer and not just web-based.

I will be using it for research, naming the "contacts" as my files and also using the custom fields as well. I won't be needing it for emailing these contacts, just for storing information from my research.

I'm confused so maybe someone could clarify what ACT Essentials actually is and does. Thank you.

  Act! Essentials allows you to manage your contacts, calendar and send email campaigns from a web browser. Act! Essentials is completely web based. Please see Act! Premium if you are interested in On-premises software. http://www.act.com/products/act-premium/
